CHANDIGARH-BORN, UK-RAISED OFFICER GRADUATES AT RAF VALLEY
Flight Lieutenant Arshdeep Singh Dang, 28, graduated as a fighter pilot on August 14 at a ceremony at RAF Valley in North Wales, becoming the first Sikh trainee to complete the Texan aircraft course at the Royal Air Force's No. 4 Flying Training School — and the first Sikh officer to earn fighter wings in the RAF since the Second World War. He now moves on to a further year of training before progressing to frontline fighter aircraft.
Dang was born in Chandigarh in 1998 and moved to the United Kingdom at the age of six. His father, Jagdeep Singh Dang, hails from Ludhiana, while his mother, Gagandeep Kaur, comes from Amritsar — a pairing of roots that will feel close to home for many families across the Ludhiana and Jagraon belt with relatives who made a similar journey abroad. The family, now settled in Southall, still speaks Punjabi at home. Dang studied mathematics and philosophy at the University of Bristol before completing officer training in February 2022.
"I am privileged to represent my community on an international stage," Dang said of the milestone, "but I don't want to be the last." For the Sangat in Jagraon and across the diaspora, his achievement lands as a marker of how far young Punjabi Sikhs abroad continue to travel while carrying their roots with them — and as a quiet challenge to the next generation back home to aim just as high.
