SGPC Chief Backs Independence Day March for Release of Long-Held Sikh Prisoners

Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee president Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami threw his institutional weight behind a demonstration organised by the Qaumi Insaaf Morcha on Independence Day, August 15, that marched toward the Punjab Governor's House in Chandigarh demanding the release of Sikh prisoners who have completed their sentences but remain in custody.

Dhami framed his support in humanitarian terms, pointing to what organisers describe as "prolonged incarceration" of individuals well beyond their formal terms as a denial of basic justice. The march brought together civil society groups and religious representatives who argue that continued detention, in some cases running into decades, amounts to an unresolved wound for the community and its families.

The issue resonates strongly in the Malwa belt, including Jagraon, where local gurdwara committees and Sangat have periodically joined similar morchas over the years, viewing the release of long-held prisoners as a matter of basic fairness that transcends political affiliation.
